En, sanctus Hieremias ad exemplum virginalis materiae in propatulo nobis occurrit, qui antequam maternis ederetur partubus, beata praedistinatione Domino dicatur et ab ipsa rudi incunabulorum teneritudine virginitati consecratur, de quo divina promulgat sententia: Antequam procederes de vulva, sanctificavi te, pulchro videlicet virginitatis praesagio: is, inquam, quantum profeticae dignitatis gratia enituerit, fulserit, floruerit, quis urbana verborum facundia fretus enarrare sufficiat?
'Now, the holy JEREMIAH presents himself clearly to us as an example of the topic of virginity, who before he had been brought forth through maternal parturition, was dedicated to the Lord by blessed predestination and from the very early tenderness of the cradle was consecrated to virginity, concerning whom the divine sentence declares: 'Before though camest forth our of the womb, I sanctified thee' [Jer. 1:5], that is, by the beautiful prophecy of virginity; Jeremiah, I say: how greatly he shone, glistened and flowered through the bounty of the prophetic dignity - who would be sufficiently sustained by the polished eloquence of words to relate?'
Text: Ehwald 1919, 250. Translation: Lapidge and Herren 1979, 77.
