Summary:
There was a woman in Seleucia whose name was Xenarchis. Although she was married and lived with her husband, she ascended to such a great height of virtue, that she was pleased with virginity. Some pious person gave her a gospel book as a gift. She accepted it with a great joy and said that it was an immensely great gift but she was not learned in reading unless the teacher of her life [that is, Thekla] would somehow help her to use this gift. Then she unfastened the book and bent over it as if to contemplate it or even to kiss it. But as soon she fixed her eyes on the letters, she began to read aloud, fluently and without hesitation, to the astonishment of the women who were around her.
Text: Dagron 1978. Summary: J. Doroszewska.
