E05696: Coptic ostracon from Jeme (Upper Egypt) with a statement drawn up by the presbyter of the church of Apa *Kyriakos (presumably the child martyr of Tarsus, S00007) at Jeme announcing that he and his family are allowed to build behind the 'new church', most likely of the same saint; datable to the 8th century.

The presbyter of the church of saint Kyriakos at Jeme informs a man from Jeme that the presbyter as well as any member of his extended family are indeed in a position to build whatever they like in the vicinity of the saint’s new church.

The text is fragmentary, but lines 2–11 run as follows:

[ⲁⲛⲟⲕ personal name] ⲡⲣⲉⲥⲃ(ⲩⲧⲉⲣⲟⲥ) ⲛⲁⲡⲁ ⲕⲩⲣⲓⲕⲟⲥ ϫⲏⲙⲉ ⲉⲓⲥϩⲁⲓ ⲉⲓⲣⲁϣⲉ ϩⲛ ⲟⲩⲧⲱⲧ ⲛϩⲏⲧ ⲉⲓϫ̣ⲓ̣ ⲛⲁⲕ ⲡ̣ⲁⲥⲧⲣⲁⲧⲱⲗⲏ

‘… [I, NN], the presbyter of Apa Kyriakos at Jeme, I write happily in agreement, informing you, Pastratole, the inhabitant of Jeme, that I, or my offspring, or anyone related to me, be it from my father’s, or my mother’s side, is able to build something else [behind the] new church of [Apa Kyriakos (?) …] ’
