IX Kl Oct.
'23 September. The feast of Saint Sossius, deacon of the city of Misenum in Campania, who when he was thirty years old, chose martyrdom by decapitation along with the blessed Genuarius bishop of Benevento, in the time of the emperor Diocletian. At a certain time, when he was reading the Gospel in the church of the city of Misenum, in the presence of Bishop Genuarius (for he was accustomed to visit him frequently because of [the deacon's] holiness and judiciousness), that same bishop suddenly saw a flame rise out from his head, which no one else saw, and he foretold that [Sossius] would be a martyr. After not many days, that same deacon was detained and placed in prison. When the bishop came to visit him, along with his own deacon Festus and his lector Desiderius, he himself was also detained along with them, and all were killed along with three others.'
