XII Kl Oct.
'20 September. In Cyzicus, the feast of Saints Fausta the virgin and Evilasius, under the emperor Maximianus; Evilasius himself, when he was chief of the palace, commanded her to be shorn of her hair and shaved to her dishonour: then to be hung up and tortured: at which time, a flash from the heavens smote many of his servants. Then he commanded caskets to be brought there and commanded her to be placed and fastened inside, and to be cut down the middle like a piece of wood; but the executioners did not have the power to harm her with their saws. In the middle of all this, Evilasius, astounded, began to believe in Christ: and when this was announced to the emperor, he sent a prefect who tortured [Evilasius], bravely hung up. [The emperor] also commanded Fausta, naked and without a veil, to be led out from prison and her head to be bored through and nails driven into it. Afterward not only her head and face, but also her breast and entire body to her shins were filled with nails. After these things, he commanded a frying pan to be made red hot: but as she psalmodized, it became cold again. In the middle of all this, a voice coming from heaven called for them, and so they surrendered their spirits. Fausta was thirteen years old, and Evilasius eighty.'
