XVII Kl. Feb.
'16 January. The feast of St Marcellus, pope, who was first beaten with clubs on the command of the emperor Maximianus, and then expelled from the sight of him whom he [Marcellus] had reproached. Then [Maximianus], hearing that [Marcellus] had made a church, and was celebrating masses in it in the middle of the city, in the house of the holy Lucina, whom [Maximianus] himself had condemned with confiscation of property because she kept giving donations to Christians from her own resources: commanded boards to be arranged in that same church for the draught of animals of the public stable and condemned the bishop himself to servicing the animals, along with regular public sentinels. Indeed after serving there for many years, clad in a mantle made of hair-cloth, he died and, having been preserved with spices by the priest John and blessed Lucina, was buried in the cemetery of Priscilla.'
