Summary:
Maximus opens the sermon by stating that it is the feast day (natalis) of Cantius, Cantianus and Cantianilla. They were all siblings. In the face of persecution, they fled in a mule drawn carriage but one of the mules collapsed outside the walls of Aquileia. They were captured and martyred. Maximus emphasises that fleeing was still glorious, comparing their flight to Elias’ (Elijah’s) journey to heaven in a horse drawn chariot. He claims they did not flee, but instead sought to proclaim themselves as Christians to all passers-by and quicken their journey to martyrdom.
