Quod in die obitus sui, cum a circumstantibus ciuibus, utpote discessurus, pater tam amabilis amarissime plangeretur, eum flendo requisiuere, dicentes: "quem post te, pater, habebimus?" Quibus ipse pater per prophetiae spiritum respondit, dicens: "post constantium mulionem, post mulionem fullonem. O te, aquine, et hoc habes".
‘On the day of his death the people of Aquino gathered round him to weep over the pending loss of their loving father. Full of grief they asked him, ‘Whom shall we have as a father when you are gone?’. In answer he gave them this prophetic reply: ‘After Constantius you shall have a mule driver and after him a fuller. This too, must you endure, O Aquino!’
Constantius was duly followed by Andrew – who had one time worked as a caretaker of post-horses on the highways – and then Jovinus – who had previously worked as a fuller.
Text: de Vogüé 1978. Translation: Zimmerman 1959. Summary: Frances Trzeciak.
